Today marks the opening of the MsP Production Vault. If you are a producer, especially a hip-hop/rap one, you spend a decent amount of time looking for new samples and sounds just to keep the fire going. I know I’ve spent lots of time doing this, and I know others who spend hours looking for new torrents and downloads for their production.

To help you aspiring (and already established) producers out there with your search, every week I’ll be posting up new sample sets to add on to your music!

This week, we start with a drum kit that has the folder name “Complete Urban Flava.” These were passed on to me by my cousin Boy Gnyus of Gnyus Productions. It has over 300 different drum sounds, and it should be enough to keep you occupied until I drop another next week. Head on to the vault to download it for free today!

As much as this weekend was a busy weekend (mostly because of my cousin getting married, congratulations to Jay and Thiana), I was able to get some work done and start on two projects. One of which is the FoRcE oNe project that I had mentioned in a previous post, and the other is a joint project between myself, ADM and K-Maculate, which had an impromptu beginning. Both of which will go on the MsP compilation album, tentatively titled Roll Call ’10.

The FoRcE oNe project has some interesting tidbits. First off, the beat for this one as selected was a custom I made specifically for him in his interests. He’s a big Lil’ Wayne and Young Money fan, so this beat follows that new southern sound with an MsP twist. The drum pattern and bassline are akin to those found on their recent work, but the instrumentation and sampling is more MsP style. Once some recording is done, I will post up a tidbit so you guys can get an idea of what we’re aiming for. The second thing about this that I like is that FoRcE oNe will be spearheading the project, and I will just be trying to bring out the vision he’s got. I’m trying to get him to let his creativity loose while increasing my producing experience in the sense of producing for other people. Most of my producer work has been for myself, so getting a chance to produce for others (especially for uno because he’s only done one song on his own, this will be his second) is always exciting.

The beat is in Bb minor, and utilizes samples from a rare old school soul song called “Why,” as well as the use of the Hypersonic plugin by Steinberg. Drums used were from the Sounds in HD kits that Boy Gnyus supplied me with, and of course the beat was created in FL Studio. It clocks in at 140bpm, but will mostly sound more like 70bpm with that Young Money style flow that’s been coming from the South.

The second project that was worked on this weekend was the impromptu MooN ShynE/ADM/K-Maculate project that started earlier this evening. What we’re looking to do is something in the vein of what David Guetta has been doing these days as well as other non-hip-hop club hits. So far, we’ve nailed down a decent club beat akin to Guetta’s recent hits such as “Sexy B*tch” and “Memories” with Kid Cudi, but once again, putting an MsP spin on it. It’s a good mesh of styles as ADM’s electronic work comes into play here production wise in a big way, K comes in with some creativity as far as concepts, lyrics and vocals, and I come in with my lyrics/vocals and production work. We’ve already recorded a small piece of the song that will fit as one of those catchy 8 bar loops that DJ’s should have fun with in the clubs.

The song is in Ebm, using a mixture of different drum kits we have here at Lunar Base. We used Native Instruments’ FM8 for some synth work, as well as Vanguard for a gate. We were using Cakewalk Studio Instruments String Section, but we may opt for a different set of strings (Hypersonic being a very likely candidate) as I’ve overused String Section to death lol. We layered the kicks and included 808 bass drums to give it that extra push. We’re also using the Izotope plugin called Trash (the plugin used to achieve Justin Timberlake’s voice in Sexy Back) to give it that real gritty club feeling. Next week, we’re looking to do some more work on this, and I hope to have a sample for you guys to hear after that session.

All in all, a very productive weekend, and with other projects also in the wings, there will be more fun coming! Stay tuned.

So this is the results of the first second draft. Not too bad. The scratches you hear obviously won’ t be part of the actual song, they’re just meant as a tag in case somebody wants to try something slick.

Here’s the rundown of what’s in the recording:

1. Sequenced drums
2. Snares from “Hit the Road Jack”
3. Recorded drums, live: Beta 52 on the kick, PG58 on the snare, AT2020 overhead (mostly the ride cymbal with natural reverb)
4. Live guitar, Epiphone Les Paul Special II, direct through a Studio Projects VTB1 preamp with tube injection at 12 o’clock, through a Samson C-Com16 compressor, IK Multimedia Amplitube DUO on the Bluesy Combo setting5. Cakewalk Studio Instruments Bass Guitar (later to be replaced by an actual live bass [Epiphone Viola Bass])
6. ReFX Nexus on Ballad Grand Piano
I’m enjoying this so far, and I can see where I can take this and maybe add in some hip-hop elements. I may employ the vocal talents of one Harmony Speaks to join me on this. We’ll see. =]

More coming soon!

All the tracks on the album are done. All I’m waiting for is Destiny Soprano to re-record her part on “Bomb Squad” and it’s a wrap! She’s coming by tomorrow to record her part, and as soon as the mixing is over, it’s being sent over to TuneCore and it’ll be on its way to iTunes. March 1, 2010 is the tentative release date, as it usually takes 4-6 weeks for iTunes to have stuff up via TuneCore.

I released “Phase 2 – Lyrics to an Identity” almost 5 years ago. It took 5 years to make this album, and it’s gone through so many iterations and name changes that at one point, during a low point in my life, I didn’t think the album was going to come out. I have to thank God for that one (and everything else), because ever since I started playing in the church band every Sunday and cleaning up some of the stuff in my life that needed cleaning, I became revitalized and re-inspired. I’m not exactly making Christian music right now totally, though I have made Christian songs in the past, but He’s blessed me anyway with inspiration, wisdom, and freedom of creativity.

The acronym in the title of the album, “Phase 3 – L.Y.R.I.C.A.L. Without Fear,” stands for Leave Your Regrets In Christ And Live. This is the basically the approach I took with the album as time went on. The songs that were going to originally be part of the album were all pretty standard, and although I love every song I make, it was the songs that were different from what I’m used to doing that were the most enjoyable to make. There were three guitar solos (“Mostly Boast,” “Found Me,” “The Bomb Squad”), a video game sample (“Call to Arms” from Final Fantasy VI), a symphony orchestra (courtesy of Project SAM Symphobia, on “Round and Round”), capoeira rhythm (“Roll Your Windows”), blaring choirs with my “Bleeding Heaven” technique (on “Devastator,” more on the “Bleeding Heaven” technique later), multi-layer samples (“Roll Your Windows”), Beatles style build up and scream (“Mostly Boast”), live drums, bass and piano recordings (“Live Hip-Hop,” available on the iTunes version of the album) and other things. Although some signatures of mine are there, this album sounds distinctly different from my past two, and I think it’s for the better.

As far as concepts go, I think “The Bomb Squad” was the most fun. You also have “Found Me” and “Round and Round” which are both incredibly personal to me. “Mostly Boast” was the record that I let loose on and I stopped caring about what people would say if I did certain things in my music. “Call to Arms” was actually inspired by a crew of people I was running with that was finally getting over past beefs to go have fun again. “4 My Ghostwriter” actually makes the idea of a ghostwriter a more positive thing (listen to the song and you’ll see why). “Do Something” was my declaration that I wouldn’t just sit around and do nothing, especially after my best friend Rain past away in 2007. “Every Move” was me slowly getting to the point where I wouldn’t let people dictate what I rhyme about. “Handle Our Biz,” “Spear,” and “You Need To..” were getting my people involved with some 5fam love. “Devastator” was simply me kicking ass and getting you to want to kick ass too; in some ways an “I OWN YOU” part two.

I had a lot of fun with this album, and about just as much frustration. All the frustration was worth it though, and what resulted was an album that I’m most proud of and can’t wait to show the world. I’ve even got a plan for the songs I will perform, and hopefully I can gain some traction with some new listeners.

I have to thank everyone who helped me on this album with their contributions: Harmony Speaks, Destiny Soprano, CoCoa, DiMpLeZ, Brian Bullion, FoRcE oNe, Less, K-Maculate, ADM, Boy Gnyus, Vincent, Takewun, JC and SL. Each recording was a fun (and funny) experience. Especially “The Bomb Squad,” which took two years to complete and everyone in MsP had a role and their voice recorded on it.

Hopefully, when you listen to it, you’ll learn some things from it, whether it’s personal to you or on a musical/lyrical level if you are a musician. Either way, most importantly, I hope you enjoy the music when it comes out on March 1, 2010.

Thanks for reading also! More to come!

So “Call to Arms” is finally done, and you can listen to it on my Facebook page. This is a fight song, I guess. The concept of it is to bring a feeling of rallying your group, team, crew, company, whatever into focus and unite them into a common cause charging the battlefield, court, stadium or whatever applies.

There’s a lyrical sequence in the second verse that I particularly like, because of the double meanings:

“Make moves, hustle and pay dues //
Rocking the blue collar or Blue Man Group, gang bangers //
Blue bandanas cockin them hammers //
Mix them with the Red you get Purple, light it up! //”

So we go from blue collar (manual labor class, like construction workers), to Blue Man Group (theatrical production), to blue bandanas (referring to the Crips), mix it with the red (referring to the Bloods), you get Purple (the secondary color mix from red and blue, and also known as a type of marijuana).

Jay-Z is awesome at the double entendre, and I want to continue using that technique and also layer it with metaphors and similes in the classical sense.

Another thing to note about this song is the sample used in it. It’s from the video game Final Fantasy VI, when you enter the kingdom of Figaro. I actually had a few versions of using this sample and I finally settled on one where the auxiliary instruments in the song can stand alone and still carry the song and the horns of the sample can accentuate it. It gives it a feel of royalty, and I guess that’s where the feeling of solidarity comes from and where I got the concept for it.

Only one song left for this album. Maybe FINALLY, Phase 3 can come out.. only FIVE years after Phase 2. =] I feel very strongly about this album and I have enough powerful solo songs in here to perform and promote.

Phase 4 won’t take nearly as long, as Phase 3 marks the end of this particular trilogy, and this album will be made with no existing preconditions and will blueprint the next two subsequent phases. No signs of stopping for me, music is in my blood. =]
