Project Inhaler (name pro tempore), Wind Beneath My Wings, and.. you guessed it.. Bomb Squad!

To start off, I wanted to say that this past week was very productive in getting this Bomb Squad project finished with Cocoa, DiMpLeZ and ADM all supplying their much needed vocals.  This means that only Harmony Speaks, Destiny Soprano (re-recording) and I are the last ones left.  Hopefully, this week will be just as productive.

Some interesting tidbits about the ADM recording; ADM voice-acts pretty well, and I’m guessing this has to do with some of the work he has done on radio and his video/movie classes.   As he put it:

“This sounds like an episode of 24.” – ADM

That should give you some insight on the song. =]

On to Project Inhaler.  Project Inhaler is the project that ADM and I will be working on.  It is geared to be a Prodigy style song, so pretty close to Drum-N-Bass.  We originally thought it would be classified as Jungle until we re-evaluated the speed of the beats and realized that it was WAY too slow to be jungle.  We were able to clock “Breathe” (The Prodigy song) in at about 127bpm, whereas Jungle is typically in the upper 100′s, upwards of 150bpm, I believe, if not faster.

Based on the research ADM had done, he found that a handful of producers suggested using breakbeat templates on the FPC in FL Studio to create the breakbeat needed for this type of project.  Some suggested layering the breakbeats as well.

We were lazy though, so after going through the kicks and changing each sample to a more suitable kick drum from stock, we nixed that process and decided to make our own breakbeat using regular sequencing methods.

A welcome addition here is the use of the Glitch plugin.  Boy Gnyus and Brian Bullion both suggested Glitch (or something similar) to me as it was the same plugin that Timbaland used in his songs to do his mid-bar reverse effects (Listen to ending of Jay-Z – Dirt Off Your Shoulder, and The Game – Put You In The Game for reference).  ADM suggested we try it after he had downloaded it a few days prior, and so we downloaded it and put it into use.  We haven’t gotten the total benefit of using it yet, though we used the Gater and Crusher in different parts of the break as well as the rhythm synth we used and the results were very gritty and we’re definitely looking to extend the use of the plugin.  For you producers out there, you can find Glitch here.

For anyone who is familiar with the song “Breathe” or other songs from Prodigy (more notably, the Fat of the Land album), then you know vocals are involved.  We are looking to have K-Maculate drop some vocals on this one, and I will try to as well.  I felt the British accents of both the people in “Breathe” helped that track, so I don’t know if our voices will make the cut.  We always make do with what we have though, and I’m sure we can figure something out to make it nice and greezy.

We employed Sylenth (or was it Vanguard?  I’ll have to re-open the project) as the ryhthm synth; using a distorted guitar type of synth preset.  Coupled with Glitch, it came out pretty juicy.  We don’t plan for this song to be too melodic as we want it to have that really aggressive feel.  The song does have a nice sounding base (foundation or low octave?  see what I did there? lol) in B minor, and we won’t be using too many notes to keep the aggressive tone.

With that foundation, we finished this phase of work on the project with some next steps being outlined:

- Map out the song arrangement, and what to break each section with
- Gather ideas for lead synths or instruments.  “Breathe” used a non-descript plucking of something as well as some guitar usage; both clean and distorted
- Come up with an actual name for the song
- Bring K in for some vocal input

I’m actually starting to wonder now what Harmony Speaks would sound like on something like this.  Maybe for a 1 or 2 bar break?  It would serve as part of the separation of sequences in the song.  I’ll run that through with ADM and see what he says.

I’ve also re-commenced work on Destiny Soprano’s “Wind Beneath My Wings” cover.  I’ve gone through two different iterations of it and through both I haven’t been comfortable.  I do feel however with the addition of the acoustic drumset in the studio, it may open some things up.  I’m thinking of now giving it a more rock feel in the recording (low to almost dry reverb with more guitars compared to the rich reverb-filled original with synths/keyboarding), and maybe some R&B elements in the arrangement.

Bomb Squad… again. lol Robotic voice formula

I went over to Proteus Studio to record DiMpLeZ part in Bomb Squad.  She plays the part of the bomb in this whole thing.  Aside from a verse she had to record as the bomb, she also had to recite times.  For example, “T-Minus 3 minutes 38 seconds.”

I couldn’t just use her actual voice because her voice is pretty soft.  So after some experimenting, I developed a decent technique to give her voice a mechanical/robotic touch.

Take the vocal recording, duplicate it twice (not necessarily recorded again twice, but you can if you want) so you have three different samples.  Give the first sample an old school radio type filter.  Run the second sample through a pitch shift transposed by -12.  Run the third sample though a pitch shift transposed by +1.  Note that when you pitch shift, do not shift the tempo so that all three will be played simultaneously.  Play them together and you will get a nice robot type sound.  Very sci-fi, I think.

Two more vocalists, and one re-recording, and this thing is OFFICIALLY DONE!  I cannot wait!

“Call to Arms” finally done!

So “Call to Arms” is finally done, and you can listen to it on my Facebook page.  This is a fight song, I guess.  The concept of it is to bring a feeling of rallying your group, team, crew, company, whatever into focus and unite them into a common cause charging the battlefield, court, stadium or whatever applies.

There’s a lyrical sequence in the second verse that I particularly like, because of the double meanings:

“Make moves, hustle and pay dues //
Rocking the blue collar or Blue Man Group, gang bangers //
Blue bandanas cockin them hammers //
Mix them with the Red you get Purple, light it up! //”

So we go from blue collar (manual labor class, like construction workers), to Blue Man Group (theatrical production), to blue bandanas (referring to the Crips), mix it with the red (referring to the Bloods), you get Purple (the secondary color mix from red and blue, and also known as a type of marijuana).

Jay-Z is awesome at the double entendre, and I want to continue using that technique and also layer it with metaphors and similes in the classical sense.

Another thing to note about this song is the sample used in it.  It’s from the video game Final Fantasy VI, when you enter the kingdom of Figaro.  I actually had a few versions of using this sample and I finally settled on one where the auxiliary instruments in the song can stand alone and still carry the song and the horns of the sample can accentuate it.  It gives it a feel of royalty, and I guess that’s where the feeling of solidarity comes from and where I got the concept for it.

Only one song left for this album.  Maybe FINALLY, Phase 3 can come out.. only FIVE years after Phase 2. =]  I feel very strongly about this album and I have enough powerful solo songs in here to perform and promote.

Phase 4 won’t take nearly as long, as Phase 3 marks the end of this particular trilogy, and this album will be made with no existing preconditions and will blueprint the next two subsequent phases.  No signs of stopping for me, music is in my blood. =]

More Bomb Squad thoughts.. why have rap/rock hybrids been more rock than rap? ADM turns 29!

When you take into account bands like Linkin Park or Limp Bizkit from back in the day, you sometimes think about the mix of rap and rock that they put into their music and the mixture was lovely.  The one thing I noticed though was why did most of these collaborations sound more rock than rap?  It was usually a rock song with rap lyrics.  Linkin Park was a little closer to rap, but it still was too rock to be considered a half-and-half.  Lil’ Wayne has been doing his thing trying to mix some rock and rap a bit in different ways, to his credit.

I was working on Bomb Squad again last night to try to change a couple of things.  The set part of the beat for the hook was too strong melodically for Harmony Speaks to be able to lay a hook down.  I took a part of the guitar solo from the sample and had it originally set as the rhythm section for the beat of the hook, but after reviewing it was just too strong.  I decided to play the guitar myself instead, toning down the melody a little bit in favor of a more supportive, accompanying style.  It came out pretty nice, I think.  This is actually the third project on this upcoming album that uses a custom distorted guitar heavily, two of which have actual full fledged solos played by moi.  (Thank you Amplitube for the free plugin via Tunecore!)

My first three blogs have all been about this “Bomb Squad” project, and the funny thing is that if I had ran this blog from a while back, most of my blogs might have been about this.  This, of course, aside from the other songs I have completed this past year.   This is the last song that I need to finish (not counting “Call to Arms,” because I just have to lay down the vocals, I already wrote the last verse) for this album before moving on to Phase 4.  Phase 4 will be a completely different beast.

Lastly, it’s ADM’s birthday!  Wish the brosef a happy one!

The Bomb Squad – A Producer’s Challenge

Since I went solo back in 2002, I’ve (MooN ShynE) been structuring my albums similarly. I personally like consistency when it comes to art, as it gives everything a rhyme and reason. I guess it’s the logical yang to my creative yin.

On each of my two previously recorded albums, there were similarities between parallel tracks. For example, track 15 on each are the strongest (in terms of power lyricism).  “I OWN YOU” on “Phase 1 – Neolyrical,” and “Same” on “Phase 2 – Lyrics to an Identity” had the hardest delivery and the most physically strong lines.  This follows suit on the upcoming “Phase 3 – L.Y.R.I.C.A.L. Without Fear,” with the song “Devastator” (now listenable on My Facebook Page.. be a fan!)

On track 9, is the crew track.  On Phase 1 it was “We Roll” featuring Flight (who we may finally get back in touch with! more on that later) and Harmony Speaks (formerly tRe’ sTeeLo), and on Phase 2 it was “Go Crazy” featuring Boy Gnyus, Less and Harmony Speaks.

This brings us to “The Bomb Squad.”  “We Roll” had three minds together, and “Go Crazy” had four.  “The Bomb Squad” was at one point supposed to be “Style Klepto,” which had Destiny Soprano, Brian Bullion and our cousins from GNP.  It was difficult to get everyone together and record something cohesively because we were scattered all over the place.  Klepto was going to be one of the premier songs to be used for Bergenfield ’07, but that fell through.

Eventually, that collab fell through the cracks (though now I’m thinking of reviving it because TaKeWuN did record his verse and I’m not one to waste verses, maybe as a B-Side for a single?).  I made the beat for the “Bomb Squad,” and the collaboration changed to GNP, Brian Bullion, K-Maculate.  This hit a snag with Boy Gnyus withdrew from rapping and concentrated on R&B production, and Vincent (f.k.a. Jvee) and I couldn’t get away from scheduling conflicts.  (Vincent would later collab with Black and Blue Ink. [MooN ShynE and K-Maculate] on Spear for The Black and Blue Ink. EP, and Boy Gnyus would supply the beat and vocals for the MsP GNP OMG remix of Spear [also listenable on My Facebook Page) which will be track 4 for Phase 3]).

At this point, the collab changes to an all MsP affair.  MsP at the time this song will be completed will have 10 active members.  Six members so far have supplied their verses, five of which are final recordings (Cocoa, K-Maculate, Less, FoRcE oNe and Brian Bullion; Destiny Soprano needs to re-record).  Each have similarities in terms of concepts with their own individualities.  Originally, when we first started the project, we had a unified idea.  Now, we have a singular concept with different ideas.  All of the members who recorded (aside from Brian Bullion and FoRcE oNe since they are siblings who live in the same house) did so separately, which if anything, has proven to me that when you do a collaboration with a specific unified idea, it is best off to do it all together with everyone in the same room rather than at separate times with different people at a time unless you are specifically spearheading the whole thing with everyone just following your orders.

So here’s the challenge.  I’m going to be unifying 9 different spins on a particular idea and make them all completely unified, and I’m slowly getting to that eventual “Eureka!” as more pieces come in.

This may sound like a bunch of negatives, but it really isn’t.  Actually, I embrace the challenge.

I firmly believe that the role of a producer is how well he or she can take different ideas and bring them together in the best way possible without sacrificing the vision of the overall project.

For this particular project, it has taken a unique character.

Imagine having an idea for a plot for a movie with no script as of yet.   Every plot or movie has characters in it.  Quentin Tarantino (my favorite director) has a back story on every character, sometimes enough for the writer to make a prequel for each character based on their back stories alone….

Eureka. =]
